ISR Director and Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Eyad Abed (ECE/ISR) gave a plenary lecture on "Monitoring the Vulnerability of Complex Uncertain Systems" at the IEEE Multi-Conference on Systems and Control (MSC 2009) in St. Petersburg, Russia in July. The conference is one of two annual meetings of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

In the lecture, Abed talked about both existing and new approaches to monitoring the vulnerability of complex uncertain systems under stressed operation. He discussed the benefits and limitations of using exogenous probe signals, and gave examples of techniques for determining areas within a system that are of most value in system monitoring. Abed demonstrated how these techniques can provide a means both for detecting and localizing the vulnerability of a complex system to disturbances and to collapse.
