Background
In many complex manufacturing facilities, centralized procedures
are used to assign tasks to resources and schedule those tasks.
Researchers have developed a wide variety of procedures and
heuristics for solving these scheduling problems.
In a dynamic manufacturing system, rescheduling must occur
as new jobs arrive.
Rescheduling assigns these jobs to resources and schedules their
processing.
Rescheduling also helps the shop recover when
unexpected events disrupt operations, and the previous schedule
becomes infeasible.
This research is studying rescheduling systems
and how the timing and frequency of rescheduling affects the
performance of the manufacturing system.
Frequent rescheduling should create better schedules that
use resources more productively.
However, unnecessary rescheduling activities waste time and effort.
