Sports Operations Research:
Several members of INFORMS are organizing a new section - OR in SpORts. In
order for this new organization to gain section status with INFORMS, at
least twenty-five INFORMS members must sign a petition indicating they
intend to join the new section. The OR in SpORts section has planned an
organizing meeting and reception for Monday (October 25) from 6:15 p.m. to
7:15 p.m. (immediately prior to the General Reception in Denver) - all
interested INFORMS members are invited. Contact Christy Kline at
Christy.kline@INFORMS.org if you are interested in joining this new
section or contact Jim Cochran at jcochran@cab.latech.edu for more
information.

2004 Combined Colloquia<

is on Friday and Saturday, October 22-23, 2004,
at the 2004 INFORMS Annual Meeting.
This features the Sixth Teaching Effectiveness,
Future Academician, and Future Practitioner Colloquia.

The international honor society of the Operations Research community, Omega
Rho, is offering travel stipends to top Operations Research/Management
Science (OR/MS) and Industrial Engineering (IE) undergraduate students for
the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Denver, October 24-27 2004.

The RASIG (Rail Applications Special Interest Group),
a subdivision of INFORMS and Railway Age are sponsoring a
student research paper contest on
Management Science in Railroad Applications.

The George Nicholson Committee is now accepting entries for
the 2004 competition. This competition is held each year to
identify and honor outstanding papers in the field of
operations research and the management sciences written by
a student. For more details, see the

The Spring, 2004, edition of
ORMS Tomorrow,
the student membership magazine for INFORMS, is now online.
This issue includes features on graduate school,
decision analysis applications, the University of
Virginia student chapter, and student volunteers.

The Technology Management Section of INFORMS is soliciting dissertations

The Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics
departments of IBM Research
have announced their 2003 Summer Intern Program.
They are seeking both undergraduate
and graduate students in Computer Science, Computer Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics interested in
pursuing an exciting summer of research, prototyping, and
exploring new frontiers of these disciplines.
Students will have the opportunity to work
with an outstanding research team on problems that range
from the leading edge of theory to concrete problems of real users.
There will also be a unique opportunity to network
with scores of other top students from many different fields and schools.

COIN-OR
seeks to explore an alternative means for developing,
managing, and distributing OR software so that OR professionals could
benefit from peer-reviewed, archived, openly-disseminated software
In November, 2002, INFORMS agreed to host the COIN-OR initiative.
The COIN-OR
Open-Source Coding Contest is open to students and professionals
who are developing better integer progamming codes.
Prizes will be awarded in August, 2003, at the 2003 ISMP in
Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Bonder Scholarship for Applied Operations Research
in Military Applications, sponsored
by the Military Applications Society of INFORMS,
has been awarded to Noah Joseph Richmond from Stanford.
The Bonder Scholarship for Applied Operations Research
in Health Applications, sponsored
by the Health Applications Society of INFORMS,
has been awarded to Xuanming Su from Stanford.

The Mathematical Sciences Department of the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center
invites applications for the 2002-2003 IBM Herman Goldstein Postdoctoral
Fellowship for research in mathematical and computer sciences.

The fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an
opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department
members at the Research Center. The department provides an
atmosphere in which basic research is combined with work on technical
problems arising in industry.

now sought.
INFORMS has combined the Doctoral Student Colloquium,
the Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium, and
the Industry Colloquium, which
will be held on November 2-3, 2001, prior to the
INFORMS Miami 2001 conference.
All Ph.D. granting programs in operations research and
management science are invited to nominate students for participation
in the Doctoral Student Colloquium.

The George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award Committee is now accepting entries
for the 2001 award. The award for the best OR/MS dissertation serves to
promote greater interaction between academia and industry by encouraging
researchers to conduct innovative research that is relevant to practice in
any area of operations research and management science. Applications are due
by July 15, 2001.
