Challenges and Trade-Offs in Design

  • Present-day search engines are capable of finding answers to searches that cover a huge part of the web (excluding the content of databases). There is no notion of correctness in the answers.
  • Present-day logic engines have the capability of restricting their output to information that is known to be correct, but are currently incapable of wandering through masses of interwined data to construct valid answers. The process of dealing with the combinatorial explosion of possibilities that need to be traced is quite intractable.

A key question is: can we get the best of both worlds and apply these techniques to a new generation of "requirements engineering" tools?
