Problem Statement: The purpose of this mini-project (homework assignment) is to gain experience in using ideas from ontologies to model relationships among entities in component-based modeling of systems.
Step 1. Download and read the paper by Vei-Chung Liang and Chris Paredis. While you are reading the paper, focus on the modeling of systems as an assembly of components, and the use of ports as a means of communication of stuff -- information, data, energy -- between components.
Step 2. Using the work of Liang and Paredis as a starting point, develop an ontology model for one of the following application domains:
Try to think of the ontology as a specification from which actual models would be built. If you are familiar with object-oriented software development, this line of thinking is similar to the notion of a class as a software specification, and objects as instances of the classes.
Note: My goal in setting the assignment up in this way is to provide freedom to work on an open-ended problem that is interesting and/or fun. If you are uncomfortable with the RDF graph notation covered in class, please use UML/SysML class/block diagrams as a substitute.
This mini-project (homework assignment) could be worth 20 percent of your final grade.
If your project works out really well, then by all means extend it into a semester project.
You may work in teams of two.
Hand in a report of the order 10-20 pages.
Electronic submission of your homework will be best.

CPLEX is available (and seems to be working properly) in the SEIL Lab. The program is listed under the IBM ILOG group of programs (right now there are two links to CPLEX, only one of which works - that should be fixed in a day or two).
The CPLEX software has pretty extensive help documentation with samples and tutorials. Here are some links to IBM Rational Rhapsody Family training videos. I didn't see any for ILOG or CPLEX but there are some great SysML ones at the last link.
These links allow registration for future webinars as well as recordings of past sessions:
