Simulated Processes in a Learning Environment (SimPLE)

Research team

Gary W. Rubloff, Ben Shneiderman, Anne Rose, Richard Salter, Gregory B. Baecher, B. Levy, P. Tarnoff, S. Keswani

Accomplishment

Simulation-based learning modules have been created for diverse applications, such as manufacturing, hydrology and transportation.

These engineered learning systems provide a rich, supportive environment for active learning: experimentation, annotation, history-keeping, guidance, collaboration and consultation.

System architecture facilitates authoring and rapid module development.

SimPLE applications

Semiconductor manufacturing processes EquipSim
Transportation management TrafficSim
Hydrology, geopolitics, & history NileSim
Logistics and operations research
Environmental systems

Physically-based simulation and realistic workplace experiences become accessible to a diverse community of learners:

  • Novice to expert, student to practitioner
  • Anyplace, anytime

Exploiting generic architecture and templates, costs & difficulty to author IT-based learning tools is substantially reduced.
