Manufacturing systems; rapid prototyping; dynamics of mechanical structures; engineering statistics; and computer engineering
Background Information
Dr. Zhang received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983 and 1986 respectively. He also received a M.S. and B.S. degrees from Tianjin University, The People's Republic of China, in 1981 and 1966 respectively. Dr. Zhang has been on the faculty at the University of Maryland since 1989. From 1988 through 1989, Dr. Zhang was a Visiting Research Associate at the Knowledge-Based Engineering Systems Research Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was an Associate Professor at the Beijing Institute of Printing in the People's Republic of China from 1986 to 1988.
Dr. Zhang holds memberships in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Flexible Automation and Integrated Manufacturing. He received the 1992 ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award. He was the recipient of the 1993 E. Robert Kent Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Engineering. In 2004 he received the Clark School of Engineering's Poole and Kent Outstanding Teaching Award for Senior Faculty. He was named to "Keystone," the Clark School Academy of Distinguished Professors, in 2005.
Dr. Zhang's research interests include design and fabrication of dental restorations, computer aided design and manufacturing, rapid prototyping, engineering statistics, and teaching innovations.
