Research Interests
Geometric methods of transportation facility design; sensors in civil engineering applications; vehicle technology; traffic engineering, operations and control; dynamic retroreflective and electrophoretic materials for transportation applications
Background Information
David Lovell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is an Affiliate of the Institute for Systems Research, both at the University of Maryland. He has a B.A. in mathematics from Portland State University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He has worked in transportation consulting and was a combat engineer with the U.S. Marine Corps. His research interests include facility design, management, and control; computational and differential geometry; numerical methods; and the probabilistic structure of sports and tournaments.
Dr. Lovell is an affiliate of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).
