Abstract

Natural disasters have further underscored the need for a resilient electricity infrastructure. The integration of microgrids in power distribution systems will offer a decentralized control of local resources for satisfying the network reliability, resilience, and the power quality required by local loads. Microgrids will also ensure absolute and universal availability of energy in the quantity and quality necessary to meet every consumer’s needs.

This presentation discusses an algorithm for the microgrid planning as an integral component of generation and transmission expansion planning in electric power systems. The objective in this study is to minimize the total system planning cost which comprises investment and operation costs of local microgrids, co-optimized planning of large generating units and transmission lines, and the expected cost of unserved energy. The cost of unserved energy reflects the cost of load shedding which is added to the objective function for reliability considerations. The microgrid- based co-optimization planning problem is decomposed into a planning problem and annual reliability subproblem. The optimal integer decision variables calculated in the planning problem will be examined against the system reliability limits in the subproblem and the planning decisions will be revised using proper feasibility cuts if the annual reliability limits are violated. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed microgrid-based co-optimization planning in power systems and explore the economic and reliability merits of microgrid planning as compared to grid-based generation and transmission upgrades.

Biography
Dr. Mohammad Shahidehpour is the Bodine Chair Professor and Director of Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He is an expert in electric power system optimization and control with specific interests in the modeling of electricity markets with microgrids and sustainable energy applications. His perfect power project which is funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) has converted the IIT campus to a smart microgrid with a 20% reduction in its base load consumption and 50% reduction in the peak load consumption. He is the PI for a consortium of industry and academic researchers which study the next generation of wind turbine technology. He is also the PI for a wind integration project which investigates the optimal locations for wind energy integration and its impact on the U.S. Eastern Interconnection.

He has worked at IIT with 95 visiting faculty and graduate research students. He is the co-author of 380 technical papers and six books on electric power system planning, operation, and control. He is also the recipient of three best paper awards for his publications in IEEE Transaction on Power Systems. In 2011, he received the Association of Electrical Engineering Department Heads’ Innovation Award, the IEEE PES/Chicago Chapter’s Engineer of the Year Award, and the Illinois Technology Association’s Technologist of the Year Award. For his contributions to power system research and development, he was awarded the IEEE T. Burke Hayes Faculty Recognition Award and the Sigma Xi Outstanding Senior Faculty Research Award. He also received the Edison Electric Institute's Power Engineering Educator Award and the C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Young Electrical Engineering Professor Award for his contributions to research and education.

In 2009, Professor Shahidehpour received an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. He is currently a Research Professor at King Abdulaziz University (Jeddah) and Honorary Professor in the North China Electric Power University (Beijing) and the Sharif University of Technology (Tehran). Dr. Shahidehpour was a member of the United Nations Commission on Microgrid Studies.

Dr. Shahidehpour is a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions to security-constrained unit commitment algorithms in power systems. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transaction on Smart Grid.
