Abstract
This presentation introduces basic concepts of categorization in the context of engineering models. Sometimes called ontology, categorization is present in widely-used modeling languages such as the Systems Modeling Language and the Unified Modeling Language (SysML/UML).

It can be used to capture relationships between categories and the things falling into them, including categories of modeling languages elements necessary to define engineering-friendly languages. The presentation introduces basic SysML/UML notation supporting categorization, distinguishing it from sofware modeling uses of these notations.

Biography
Conrad Bock is a Computer Scientist at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology's Engineering Laboratory, specializing in formal product and process modeling. He is the laboratory's project leader for Systems Engineering Standards, and co-chair of the Systems Modeling Language Revision Task Force at the Object Management Group.

He was the founding editor for the Activity and Action models in the Unified Modeling Language and Systems Modeling Language at the Object Management Group, as well as a primary contributor to interaction modeling in the Business Process Model and Notation.
