Caring Analytics for Long-Term Care of People with Special Needs

This talk describes our efforts to build cyber-physical systems to help care for people with special needs. The term “special needs” covers a wide range of cognitive and physical limitations. With a growing worldwide population of people with special needs, we need to find new ways to give these people meaningful lives.  Because the special needs population covers such a wide range of conditions, the traditional, diagnosis-driven medical approach will not scale. We have developed activity analysis algorithms that can generate useful activity summaries from sparse sensor data in complex environments. With Mihaela van der Schaar of UCLA, we are building an analytics system that uses the results of activity analysis to generate recommendations for care based on machine learning. With Cathy Bodine of the University of Colorado, we are applying these algorithms to job training for people with cognitive disabilities.  We are developing a cyber-physical architecture that we will permanently install in a smart home for people with special needs operated by a Medicaid service provider.

Marilyn Wolf is Farmer Distinguished Chair and Georgia Research Alliance Eminient Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  She received her BS, MS, and PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1980, 1981, and 1984, respectively.  She was with AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1984 to 1989.  She was on the faculty of Princeton University from 1989 to 2007.  Her research interests included embedded computing, embedded video and computer vision, and VLSI systems. She has received the ASEE Terman Award and IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Education Award. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM and an IEEE Computer Society Golden Core member.
