Vocal development in marmoset monkeys: neuromechanics and social interactions

Abstract
Vocal development requires adaptive coordination of the lungs and larynx, their controlling muscles, the nervous system, and social interactions. We build a biomechanical model of the marmoset monkey vocal apparatus and, using behavioral data and maximum entropy methods, show that combinations of growth in the vocal tract, muscles and nervous system can account for juvenile vocal development. Our analysis appeals to dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, and is based on a normal form reduction of the biomechanical model. In this talk I hope to display lively interactions among mathematical modeling and analysis, probabilistic methods, and biophysical data.

This is joint work with Yayoi Teramoto, Daniel Takahashi and Asif Ghazanfar.

Biography
Philip Holmes was educated at the Universities of Oxford and Southampton. He taught at Cornell from 1977-94, then moving to Princeton, where he is Eugene Higgins Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Applied and Computational Mathematics, Emeritus, and a member of the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. He has co-authored over 250 papers, three books on dynamical systems and an historical account of the origins of chaos theory. He is a former Guggenheim Fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Honorary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, the American Physical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
