A Mathematician’s Journey from Theory to Systems Engineering
Wade Trappe

Associate Professor
Electrical and Computer Engineering Dept.
Rutgers University
North Brunswick, N.J.

Wade Trappe is an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rutgers University, and affiliated with the Wireless Information Network Laboratory (WINLAB). He is a 2001 Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and was advised by K.J. Ray Liu.

His research group revisits the concepts of security, and examines whether there are additional notions for security in the wireless domain. Trappe's research lies in radio resource management, physical layer technologies, and systems-level experimentation. By combining these aspects with more traditional cryptographic security methodologies, he has been able to produce results that will have a practical impact on current and future system deployment.

Trappe co-authored his first book as a student, Introduction to Cryptography with Coding Theory, with L. C. Washington. The book is in its second edition. In 2005 he co-authored Digital Fingerprinting for Multimedia Forensics with Ray Liu, Min Wu, Z. J Wang, M. Wu, and H. Zhao. In 2007 he again teamed with Liu as well as Yan Sun on Network-Aware Security for Group Communications.

He has won several best paper awards and owns two patents with Liu and others, “A Dynamic Key Distribution Scheme Using Data
Embedding for Secure Multimedia Multicast,” and “Collusion-resistant Fingerprinting for Multimedia.”
