NICHOLAS ROUSSOPOULOS (nick@isr.umd.edu)

Professor, Computer Science

Dr. Roussopoulos received his B.A. degree in Mathematics from the University of Athens in 1969. He received an M.S. degree and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto in 1973 and 1977, respectively.

Dr. Roussopoulos served as a lecturer in Mathematics for the Greek Army from 1969-1970. From 1971-1976, he was a Research and Teaching Assistant for the Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto. He became a Researcher for the IBM Research Lab in San Jose, California, from 1976-1977. In 1977 he joined the Department of Computer Science, University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor. In 1981 he became Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, and Associate Professor in 1985.

Dr. Roussopoulos received the Ontario Student Award (fellowship 1971-76) and postgraduate scholarship from the National Research Council of Canada (1974-76). During the Summer of 1978 he was a Visiting Scientist at the Hahn-Meitner Institute of West Berlin. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Decision Support Systems, North Holland, and the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Information Systems, Pergamon Press; and was Guest Editor of a special issue of IEEE Computer Magazine on "Future Directions on Database Systems and Engineering," December 1986. He is an elected member of the Board Trustees of the VLDB Endowment. Since 1985 he has been a member of the Space Science Board Committee on Data Management and Computation. He was the Co-Chairman of the VHSIC Engineering Information System in November 1985 and January 1986.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Roussopoulos' research is in high performance database dystems, client-server database architectures, distributed database systems, geographic information systems, network management information systems, database design and management, engineering information systems, expert database systems, software engineering databases, and artificial intelligence databases.
