The cortical multiscale representation of the spectral profile is an affine wavelet transform of the auditory spectral profile. This multiscale representation has immediate applications as a front-end in diagnostic and monitoring systems, and other acoustic analysis systems which have yet to be explored and tested. However, beyond these applications, the inherent hierarchical structure of the wavelet representation lends itself to the discovery of higher level organizational and perceptually important features through various clustering and self-organization algorithms such as: ( A.1) the Tree Structured Vector Quantizer (TSVQ) [.Baras Wolk 1993.] and the Kohonen self-organizing neural networks [.Kohonen 1984.]; ( A.2) the wavelet-PCA (principal component analysis) [.Krishnaprasad Kugarajah 1996.]; ( A.3) Wavelet-based denoising [.Donoho 1994.]; ( A.4) the independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm [.Bell 1995, Comon 1994, Parga 1996.].
